Exhibition “Mértola is in Fashion” ends on Friday, the 28th

The exhibition “Mértola is in Fashion”, on display at the Ermida e Necrópole de S. Sebastião Museum, in Mértola, opened on 18 May, International Museum Day, can be seen until next Friday, 28 July.

In 2022, the European Year of Youth, the heritage of Mértola, particularly the different museum centers, was the starting point for the exercises of the 2021th year 2022/9 academic year. This was materialized in the discipline of Visual Education, which involved design and fashion as artistic areas.

The works developed result from the collaboration between the project “Desenhar a Terra Futura”, coordinated by the designer Alexandra Cabral and Escola Secundária de São Sebastião, through its pedagogical project, implemented by teacher Nádia Torres.

Embroidery, block stamping stamps and logos were produced, using sewing, stamping and graphic design techniques, generally used as creative tools in fashion design.

The two pieces of clothing on display resulted from the practice of participatory design, with the students printing cloths with the stamps they produced, which were then used to make pieces designed under the project – in this case two tunics inspired by the Roman costume.

The entity promoting the project is Associação Via Criativa, whose main objective is to promote Design for Local Development. The Municipality of Mértola and the Parish Council of Alcaria Ruiva are institutional partners.

“Desenhar a Terra Futura” is supported by the Healthy Neighborhoods Program launched in 2020, an initiative of a participatory nature, promoted by the Portuguese Government, to improve the quality of life in vulnerable territories.
