Confraria launches book “The Gastronomy of Ria Formosa – Traditions, people and historical heritage”

14 traditional Algarve recipes and 6 author recipes were collected

“The Gastronomy of Ria Formosa – Traditions, people and historical heritage” is the title of the first book by the Confraria Marinha da Ria Formosa, released this Friday, July 22nd.

According to Cláudia Luz, Grand Master of the Confraria, «this project was born from the desire to perpetuate the living memory of our Ria Formosa, in what gives us gastronomic, historical and identity richness».

«It is more than a cookbook, it is a repository of contexts that define us as Algarvians, lovers of this lagoon that enriches us so much. And, in addition, to highlight the endogenous resources of the Ria and understand its historical, socioeconomic and geographical context », he adds.

14 traditional Algarve recipes and 6 author recipes were collected (awarded in the 1st Gastronomic Contest of the Confraria Marinha da Ria Formosa), which use ingredients from the Ria Formosa.

The Confraria emphasizes that «gastronomic tourism is a differentiating factor for the places and, increasingly, a determinant of the choices of national and foreign tourists».

The Confrarias are currently constituted as non-profit associations that actively promote the preservation of ancestral techniques of production, manufacture, creation and tasting of the various gastronomic treasures, which we have an obligation to keep alive.

Each confrere is an ambassador for the product they defend, and is responsible for defending the gastronomic/enophile heritage of their confraternity and allying themselves with the defense of all others.

Born on October 15, 2018, the Confraria Marinha da Ria Formosa is headquartered in Faro and its coverage area is regional, encompassing all the municipalities that belong to the Ria Formosa, namely Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António.

It is a non-profit legal entity governed by private law, whose principles are to contribute to the survey, defense, promotion and dissemination of the cultural, environmental, historical and gastronomic heritage of the Ria Formosa.
