CCDR shows how European funds helped Algarve's Blue Growth

“The Potential of the Sea in the Diversification of the Algarve’s Economic Base” will be the topic of a session at VRSA

The Regional Blue Growth Strategy for the Algarve will be the subject of reflection in a session that will take place on Wednesday, July 13, at the Vicente Campinas Municipal Library, in Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA), dedicated to the theme “The Potential do Mar in the Diversification of the Economic Base of the Algarve”.

In addition to the workshops “Aquaculture and Algae Production. Environment, Research and Science” (10:30 am), Shipyards and Naval Industries (14:30 pm) and Nautical Activity and Tourism (16:00 pm), the program of this initiative of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) has a session in which José Maria Costa, the Secretary of State for the Sea (17:30 pm), and with a visit to the Nautiber shipyards, in VRSA (19:00 pm).

In the closing session, in addition to the presentation of the results of the three workshops that will take place throughout the day, several specialists will speak.

Ruben Eiras, from Fórum Oceano, will present “The Challenges of the Blue Economy in the Algarve”, while Fernando Perna, researcher at CITUR at the University of Algarve, will speak about “Nautical Tourism”. Alexandra Teodósio, vice-rector of UAlg, will speak about “Science of the Sea”.

In addition to the member of the Government, the session will feature Pedro Valadas Monteiro, regional director of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Algarve, José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve and Álvaro Araújo, president of the VRSA Chamber.

According to José Apolinário, the realization of this initiative is related to the need to create a network, with a view to future synergies, between public and private agents that have obtained funding to develop projects in the three identified segments, within the scope of the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Plan. .

The data already available point, moreover, to «the reinforcement of investment in the sector», in the Algarve region.

“It is urgent that a joint assessment be carried out on the 94 operations financed by the 2020 community support framework and that, also together, the next steps of this bet on Blue Growth, which was clearly assumed by the Algarve, are foreseen”, explains José Apolinário.

The president of the Algarve CCDR believes that «the commitment to the sea will continue. The results of the work done so far are very encouraging and, therefore, we are committed to increasing community support for this sector in the next 2030 community framework».

José Apolinário believes that «the sea is one of the strongest pillars for the diversification of the economic base of the Algarve region».
