Algarve calls for responsible tourism, with the campaign «Nature does not take a vacation»

Aimed at tourists visiting the region, the campaign is available in Portuguese, English and Spanish, on multiple platforms.

"Nature does not take a vacation" is the claim of the new Algarve Tourism campaign that aims to raise awareness of sustainable tourism and draw attention to the consequences of climate change in the destination. The campaign starts this Monday and runs until September, calling for good practices to be maintained by everyone, even during the holidays.

Aimed at tourists visiting the region, the campaign is available in Portuguese, English and Spanish, on multiple platforms: outdoors, buses, press advertisements and on the network of tourist offices in the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).

But the strong bet is on digital. three will be created spots 20 seconds for social networks, where there will be posts e stories sponsored, in addition to advertisements and displays on websites targeted to the target audience.

In parallel, a microsite is available – tempodecuidar.visitalgarve.pt – with 12 tips on environmentally friendly behaviors that should be adopted by tourists on vacation and other information about sustainability in the Algarve, included in the guiding documents for adaptation to climate change (Intermunicipal Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change) and on the website algarveadapta.pt.

These tips are also shared on ecoflyers at tourist offices, printed on seed paper that can be planted after reading.

«Nature does not take a vacation. Algarve, time to take care" is a call-to-action so that tourists don't relax when it comes to sustainability, because it's time to take care of the planet. The signature is accompanied by the representation of a bee, symbol of work and environmental sustainability, known for establishing the necessary balance in nature.

“The need to reinforce a collective feeling of protecting the natural heritage of the territories and the richness of their biodiversity is vital. Only by creating this awareness, in the places and in those who visit us, can we aspire to keep the Algarve with a rich and attractive offer», points out João Fernandes, president of Turismo do Algarve.

“The region is faced with environmentally sensitive issues that can negatively influence, or even compromise, the destination's development strategy. It is therefore essential to raise awareness and encourage the population to actively contribute, through their actions, to mitigate these issues. Tourism, as a pillar of the region's economy, plays a fundamental role in the development of this awareness», adds the official.

This is just the first campaign integrated in the project «Adaptation with Knowledge, Climate Change», financed by the EEA Grants, through the Environment Program, whose main objective is to improve the Algarve's resilience and response capacity in the face of climate change, creating the necessary support bases for the implementation of the Algarve Intermunicipal Adaptation Plan to Climate Change (PIAAC-AMAL).

In addition to this one, which is now starting, two more campaigns are planned until the end of the year: one aimed at trade, also to be developed by RTA, and another aimed at residents of the region, in charge of AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve, an entity that together with The Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS) and RTA completes the group of partners for this project.
