ABC is not in danger of extinction, guarantees CHUA

«Cooperation between CHUA and the University of Algarve is proceeding normally, in the spirit of good faith and harmony, both in the field of Teaching, Medicine, Nursing and other Health Courses, as well as in the field of Research»

The public consortium ABC (Algarve Biomedical Center) «was created by ministerial decree, involving the Ministries of Health and Higher Education», with the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) and the University of Algarve, entities that make up this body, «obliged to pursue the purposes of the consortium, not fitting them, nor being able, to extinguish it”.

In fact, «only the Government has the power to decide on the extinction, or modification of the legal framework, of the ABC».

This is one of the main points of the clarification sent this afternoon to the newsrooms by the CHUA which, he underlines, "never defended" the extinction of the ABC, but "has been continuing to deepen it".

The clarification follows the announcement by ABC employees that they will demonstrate tomorrow, 20th of July, next to the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), in Faro.

In a note sent to the press yesterday, the officials said that they would «express their concern and their displeasure in the face of the very serious situation that the consortium is going through, and which may soon jeopardize the future of the Algarve Biomedical Center».

According to the officials, “more than 120 qualified jobs are at risk, as well as more than 80 million euros in projects concluded, with a clear impact on the scientific and public health ecosystem in the Algarve and in the country”.

The tense situation results do iron arm between the current president of ABC, the doctor Nuno Marques, and the Board of Directors of CHUA, that o Sul Informação was taking care of.

In their clarification, those responsible for the Hospital Center emphasize that "the cooperation between CHUA and the University of the Algarve (UAlg) is proceeding normally, in the spirit of good faith and harmony, both in the fields of Teaching, Medicine, of Nursing and other Health Courses, as in the field of Research, regularly continuing the contacts and agreements committed as necessary for such activities from both sides».

In other words, contrary to what the officials fear, there is no danger either for the future of CHUA, or for the projects that are being developed within its scope.

CHUA explains that, «with the objective of achieving the mission of the ABC Consortium, CHUA and UAlg created an Association for the Development of ABC (AD-ABC), under private law, in which they hold equal shares».

This association, AD-ABC, «is the entity with legal personality, contracting the projects to be developed by the ABC Consortium and with its employees and collaborators of the aforementioned association».

However, guarantees the clarification, «it was never nor is the intention of CHUA to extinguish the AD-ABC, nor to modify its statutory situation».

In fact, the note adds, “this year elections were held for the governing bodies of AD-ABC in which all parties are duly represented, exercising their public rights and responsibilities”.

Finally, CHUA reaffirms its «commitment to joint cooperation with the UAlg, in the ABC modalities and beyond, in order to pursue their common institutional interests and contribute to the well-being of the populations and the prestige of the Region» .
