Quinta do Lago turned into a blanket of smoke [with video]

The fire is being fought by 299 operatives, 109 vehicles and an air resource.

A rush of cars, people and a lot of concern on their faces. THE Quinta do Lago is experiencing a morning of great restlessness, due to a fire that has already forced the removal of 70 people from their homes and which covers this locality in the municipality of Loulé with a dense blanket of smoke.

Whether in Ludo or in the São Lourenço area, the scenario repeats itself: blocked roads, people on the side of the road and the GNR controlling entries and exits.

At roundabout 5, on Avenida André Jordan, David Bickerton is in a flurry of phone calls.

"I have my wife still at home and I'm waiting for the evacuation", he tells the Sul Informação.

The Englishman has lived in Quinta do Lago for two years and saw his house threatened by flames. Everything happened “suddenly”, he explains, not hiding his nervousness.

“In the morning, everything was fine. But, from one moment to the next, the smoke and flames started”, he says.

The Briton does not hide his fear: «it is a very complicated situation – I dare say that the most worrying we have experienced since we have been in Portugal».

Close to David Bickerton is Rogério Pires.

The worker, who was on a project at Infraquinta, was also surprised by the advance of the flames. In fact, the Infraquinta headquarters itself was evacuated.

«When we arrived in the morning, we still started work, but we were forced to leave», he says, with a colleague at his side.

All work material was left behind. «Everything was there: machines, etc», he tells our newspaper.

As we speak, cars and cars are passing by this roundabout.

On the way to the center of Quinta do Lago, there is a long queue – many people fleeing the fear that this fire is causing.

At the moment, the fire is being fought by 299 operatives, 109 vehicles and an air vehicle. The remaining air assets were diverted to the fire that in the meantime started in Monchique.
