Saramago's daughter and filmmaker meet in Portimão for a conversation in the garden

The «Blue Summer» initiative continues this Saturday, with another conversation moderated by Carlos Vaz Marques

Violante Saramago Matos, biologist, analyst, teacher, writer, politician, painter, mother of two, grandmother, daughter of José Saramago, and Miguel Gonçalves Mendes, author of the documentary film «José e Pilar», will cross paths in the “ Blue Summer” in a refreshing conversation, moderated by Carlos Vaz Marques, scheduled for Saturday, July 23, at 18:30 pm, at Jardim 1º de Dezembro, in Portimão.

In the year that marks the centenary of her father, José Saramago, Violante wrote the book «De Memórias Nos Do», dedicated to the childhood times spent with her father and mother, the plastic artist Ilda Reis.

For his part, Miguel Gonçalves Mendes filmed José Saramago and Pilar del Río for four years, in the privacy of Lanzarote, on business trips around the world, at parties with friends and family. From this intense recording resulted, first, the film, “José e Pilar”, and then, a book made with unpublished material that resulted from hundreds of hours of conversation with Saramago.

Violante Matos and Miguel Gonçalves Mendes will now give “a little more blue” to the memory of José Saramago, in a conversation led by Carlos Vaz Marques, outdoors and with free admission.

The «Blue Summer» initiative is promoted by the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library, in Portimão, celebrating this year the centenary of the birth of the only Portuguese Nobel Prize in Literature, under the motto “Heirs of Saramago pass the witness”.

Curated and moderated by Carlos Vaz Marques, author of the television documentary series “Herdeiros de Saramago”, these meetings scheduled for the four Saturdays of July end on the 30th, with Valter Hugo Mãe and Manuel Jorge Marmelo.

Through this initiative, which takes place in the particularly stimulating environment of a garden and is entitled “Verão Azul”, a title inspired by the book “Agosto Azul” by Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the Municipality of Portimão «aims to encourage books and reading, giving the word to those who write them, along with those who read them".
