The PSD Algarve accuses the PS of "complicit silence" in the face of the "degradation of the SNS in the Algarve" and recalls a demonstration, in 2014, with the participation of high socialist political leaders, "against an alleged closure of the Portimão maternity hospital - never foreseen or decided by the Government at the time".

Making the parallel with the current situation, when the lack of specialists led to close the Obstetrics and Gynecology Emergency Department at the Portimão hospital between 21:00 pm on the 14th and 9:00 am today, the 20th, the Algarve Social Democrats recall that, «in 2014, around the Portimão Unit of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve, top regional leaders of the PS joined hands, joining forces to protest against an alleged closure of the Portimão maternity hospital – never foreseen or decided by the Government at the time -, in a fervent demonstration against those who said they were committed to the destruction of the SNS».

The PSD/Algarve, which sends two photographs published on social media in 2014, points out that, in this image, are “Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, who brought an injunction to prevent the closure of the maternity hospital that was not planned close, Vítor Aleixo, who dispatched at the time at the door of the Loulé Health Center in an organized protest with his counterpart in S. Brás de Alportel, Paulo Neves, councilor at the time and current member of the Board of Directors of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve and many others».

«They all have two characteristics in common: they were and are PS militants and in the face of the current chaos they say nothing, protest nothing, do nothing. Times change, wills change», reinforce the Algarve social democrats, in a note signed by Cristóvão Norte, president of the District.

The PSD guarantees that «at the time, in 2014, there were fewer constraints with the Portimão Maternity Hospital than today».

«And when there were, the intention was for the most distant pregnant women to come in advance to an apartment in Faro and then, with greater serenity, give birth. It was not the ideal solution, but it was a contingency plan for the rare occasions when the maternity unit did not meet the requirements to receive pregnant women», they add.

"Is today? What is up? The illusion is often created that there is maternity when there is none, as in Caldas da Rainha. This puts pregnant women at risk and there are no contingency plans. is to send to Faro or to Lisbon, which leads to episodes like where on Monday when a pregnant woman had her baby in the car!»

According to Cristóvão Norte «what is required is consistency. The problem is serious and structural. It is not resolved with gongorical announcements, but it has to be faced. And all are needed for it to be resolved, who is from the PS too, and in particular now with the special responsibility of governance, but that cannot make us forget the heavy responsibilities of the PS and the deafening silence of these and other responsible”.

Carlos Gouveia Martins, president of PSD Portimão, adds that “Health must stop being a party instrument. It is necessary to respect a sector that belongs to everyone, it is neither right nor left because it treats everyone equally».

«The PS demagoguery of 2014, given its silence in 2022, is an offense to all people from Portimão, Algarve and especially to health professionals who, by chance, most of them are the same and do not forget about the lack of respect that some politicians have had for their work and structural difficulties in the sector on a daily basis», concludes the leader of the Portimão Social Democrats.
