Neptune Search will study the underwater archaeological heritage of Lagos

Neptune Search – Association for Research and Defense of Nautical and Underwater Heritage signed, on June 20, in Lisbon, a collaboration protocol with the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC), to promote research and monitoring of heritage underwater archaeological site in the municipality of Lagos.

The signing of the document took place in the new premises of the National Center for Nautical and Underwater Archeology (CNANS), in Lisbon.

It was attended by José António Gonçalves, responsible for coordinating the national underwater archaeological activity on behalf of the DGPC, and Andreia Ribeiro Romão, chairman of the Neptune Search board.

Andreia Ribeiro Romão stressed that the protocol foresees the implementation of a «pioneering monitoring in national territory» of the underwater heritage of Lagos and represents «the culmination of two years of preparation, establishing contacts with elements of several academic research centers based in Portugal, Spain, Brazil and the United States of America, in addition to partnerships already established with business entities in the private sector linked to nautical and underwater activities».

On the occasion, DGPC and Neptune Search reinforced «the importance of research and promotion of underwater heritage, combined with safeguard measures that allow the formation of scientific knowledge», emphasizing «the role that heritage defense associations and the interventions of society civil society play in strengthening the response to the challenges of promoting and protecting different types of cultural heritage, including that which exists in an underwater environment».

Neptune Search is an association whose aim is to promote research and safeguard the nautical and underwater heritage, including its enhancement, dissemination and promotion, based in Lagos.

To this end, it has a group of associates specialized in various technical and scientific areas such as: Nautical Archaeology, Underwater Archaeology, Archeology, Conservation and Restoration, Cultural Heritage, History, Art History and Museography Technicians, most of which are certified divers. .
