Municipal Museum of Faro hosts modern art exhibition until October

With works from the Millennium bcp collection

The Municipal Museum of Faro and the Millennium bcp Foundation mark a new partnership to show modernist painting linked to the Algarve.

The new exhibition, entitled “Painting/Modern Art Itineraries in the Algarve through the Millennium bcp collection”, with opening scheduled for the 25th of June at 17:30 pm, covers a long chronological period, between the beginning of the 60th century and the XNUMXs. of XNUMX, spread over several thematic centers, some with better-known figures on the national scene, others with names that more recent historical research has taken from oblivion.

The exhibition begins with a section entitled “Symbolist and Naturalist Markings”, which includes works by artists such as Henrique Pousão, Falcão Trigoso, João Vaz, José Malhoa, Jaime Murteira, Ezequiel Pereira, Carlos Lyster Franco, Jorge Valadas, José Campas or Maria Alexandrina Chaves.

In the second exhibition group, called “Primeiros Modernismos”, the curator of the exhibition, Fernando Rosa Dias, professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, was chosen by artists such as Eduardo Viana, Mário Eloy, Carlos Porfírio, Roberto Nobre, Jorge Barradas, António Soares, Maria Keil do Amaral, all of them closely linked to Portuguese modernism.

With the Algarve as the common denominator of this exhibition, «the first section is in line with an old idea by Roberto Nobre in the 20s, who advocated the creation of a museum space based on artists born in the region or who had passed through here», explains the City Council of Faro in a statement.

The exhibition ends with the nucleus0 “Modernist Updates”, centered on artists from the second post-War period – in the context of abstractions and new figurations – who had relations of approximation to the Algarve or settled there in work promoting artistic issues in the province from the 1960s decade.

This nucleus includes works by names such as Júlio Pomar, René Bertholo, António Costa Pinheiro, Manuel Baptista, Jorge Martins or Álvaro Lapa.

Most of the works belong to the Millennium bcp collection, in addition to others from the Municipal Museum of Faro, Municipal Museum of Olhão, private individuals, Soares dos Reis Museum and National Museum of Contemporary Art.

The exhibition will be open between June 25th and October 16th, available from Tuesday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm and on weekends, from 10:30 am to 17:00 pm.
