Navy coordinates the rescue of 252 people in the first months of the year

In addition to the Navy, there are many entities involved in this task.

The Navy, through the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers in Lisbon, Ponta Delgada and the Funchal Subcentre, has already coordinated 197 maritime search and rescue actions, resulting in 252 lives saved.

​​​​​The numbers refer to the period between the beginning of January and the first week of June, registering in the area corresponding to the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Lisbon, 111 actions were saved 126 people.

In the area of ​​responsibility of the MRCC in Ponta Delgada, 75 search and rescue actions have been coordinated so far, with 116 people being rescued.

At the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Subcenter in Funchal, 16 actions have already been carried out, resulting in 10 lives saved.

«The efficiency rate of the service remains above 2022% in the first months of 99», emphasizes the Navy.

He also emphasizes that, «for the success of the search and rescue system, different organizations contribute and resources from different entities are committed, namely the Portuguese Navy, the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) and other resources and resources belonging to the Auxiliary Structure of the National Search and Rescue System, in particular the National Institute of Medical Emergency - Center for Guidance for Urgent Patients at Sea (INEM CODU-MAR), the National and Regional Civil Protection and Fire Services, the Administrations Maritime and Port, among other bodies».

The Navy also highlights «the support provided by merchant ships in search and rescue actions, which often deviate from their trade routes to provide the necessary assistance, always coordinated by the National Centers - MRCC Lisbon and MRCC Delgada».
