Lagoa marked International Archives Week

The Municipality of Lagoa marks the International Archives Week since 2018

Lagoa marked the International Archives Week on the 9th of June, joining the commemorations instituted by the General Assembly of the International Council of Archives, held in Quebec, in November 2007, for the promotion and dissemination of the cause of archives throughout the world. 

The Municipality of Lagoa marks the International Archives Week since 2018, with various initiatives, from the holding of conferences, dedicated to the role of municipal archives in safeguarding local memory, to Paleography workshops, with the presence, over the years, of of speakers such as José Pacheco Pereira, Armando Malheiro da Silva and Maria José Azevedo Santos.

This year, the Municipality of Lagoa carried out an initiative dedicated to the construction/remodeling of archive spaces.

The opening session was chaired by Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa, who highlighted the action taken by the Municipality «in safeguarding the municipality's documentary heritage and the investment that has been made in terms of equipment and software, as well as, in the commitment to historical research and in the publishing and information dissemination field»

This was followed by interventions by Spanish professor and architect Daniel Fernández-Carracedo, who presented the latest trends in the construction of archival buildings, with a communication entitled “Arquitectura de archivos en clave contemporaneous – Last trends” and Hélder Silva, from the Municipal Archives from Albergaria-a-Velha, who shared the perspective of the information professional and the necessary dialogue between the technician and the architect in the design of a space of this nature, in a communication entitled “Archive for Archives: the perspective of an information professional”.

The initiative, which took place in the multipurpose room of the Municipal Library, was also attended by several sectoral leaders from the Municipality of Lagoa and by Professor Maria Beatriz Marques, professor of Information Science at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, who moderated the conferences and the stimulating debate that
followed.

Councilor Ana Martins, who highlighted the relevance and topicality of the subject in the context of safeguarding the documentary heritage of Lagoa and highlighted the need to design a space of this nature, capable of housing all the current and future documentary heritage in the custody of the Municipal Archive.
