Sardine Festival elected best summer gastronomic event in Europe

This year's edition will take place from 3 to 7 August

The Sardine Festival was elected by the travel site Big 7 Travel as the best summer gastronomic event in Europe.

According to those responsible for this list (available here), «in addition to the good grilled sardines, other typical snacks and entertainment, with emphasis on live music, the festival in Portimão also allows visitors to learn about local customs and traditions, namely through the historical reconstitution of the unloading of sardines».

In the last edition before the pandemic, held in 2019, the Festival broke records, attracting around 100 visitors to the riverside area of Portimão in five days, which on several occasions sold out the amount of sardines available.

This year's edition will take place from the 3rd to the 7th of August and will be preceded once again by the reconstitution of the fish landing, scheduled for the 2nd of August, providing a journey into the past, with costumes, sayings and means of transport from a few decades ago, and that will culminate in a great popular sardine.

The entire riverside area, between the Portimão Museum and the old Lota, will be full of interesting attractions, from handicrafts to sweets, with lots of street entertainment and music, highlighting the national artists who will be on the main stage: João Leote and Marisa Liz (day 3); David Fonseca (day 4); Bárbara Tinoco (day 5); Wet Bed Gang (day 6); and David Carreira (day 7).
