The Council of Ministers today approved, at its weekly meeting, a resolution that changes the name of the International Airport of Faro to Gago Coutinho Airport.

«The Government pays tribute to Admiral Gago Coutinho, born in São Brás de Alportel, in the district of Faro, marking the centenary of the first air crossing of the South Atlantic, one of the greatest feats in the history of air navigation», said the Secretary of State for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, at the press conference.

Gago Coutinho distinguished himself as one of the most famous names in national and international air navigation.

The attribution of the admiral's name to the Airport of Faro was proposed by a group of citizens that includes algarvians such as Martins Guerreiro, captain of Abril, Carlos Brito, Afonso Dias and Luís Filipe Madeira, all former members of the Constituent Assembly.

With roots in São Brás de Alportel, where his father was born, Gago Coutinho was, with Sacadura Cabral, one of the heroes of this Air Crossing that began in Lisbon and ended in Rio de Janeiro, in 1922.
