The Algarve took a «giant step» with the installation of the new biplanar angiograph which has been in operation since April, but which only this Thursday, June 9, was officially opened by the Assistant Secretary of State for Health. The equipment makes it possible to treat patients who have had a Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) in the region.

Speaking to journalists, Ana Varges Gomes said that the angiograph represents a “very important step for the region”.

Before, “all patients with brain hemorrhages or stroke would have to be moved to Lisbon and many would not arrive there in good time, unfortunately”, he added.

The angiograph, which cost about 1 million euros, was supported by the CRESCAlgarve 2020 operational program.

António Lacerda Sales, Assistant Secretary of State for Health, also highlighted the importance of installing this equipment in the Algarve, which will prevent the transfer of patients to other Health Units.

The governor's visit to Faro it also served to launch the future Center for Medically Assisted Procreation, to be created at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve, and which, if all goes well, will be inaugurated by the end of the year.

According to António Lacerda Sales, this will be the 10th Center in the whole country, «giving equity in the geographical distribution».

«There are four centers in the North, three in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo and two in the Center region and, in this way, we will give couples greater equality of access», he added.

According to the Secretary of State for Health, this Center may also «give access to some peripheral regions, such as Baixo Alentejo, as with the angiograph».
