Loulé Chamber says that CHUA’s attitude jeopardizes projects with ABC

This position comes after Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, also condemned the attitude of CHUA yesterday.

The Loulé Chamber said this Thursday, June 9, that the «unacceptable» attitude of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) towards Nuno Marques calls into question “the commitments made” between the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC) and the municipality in the construction of the two poles linked to Biomedical Sciences and Aging”.

In a communiqué sent to the newsrooms today, the municipality of Loulé says that “it cannot remain indifferent” to this case, “since it has followed and is very familiar with the work developed by Dr. Nuno Marques as president of ABC».

The Loulé Chamber goes further and even says that the “inadmissible and persecutory attitude of the Board of Directors of CHUA, aiming above all to remove the continuity of Dr. Nuno Marques at the head of ABC, calls into question the commitments made between this institution and the municipality of Loulé, through the strategic partnership entered into for the construction of two projects in the areas of Biomedical Sciences and Aging”.

At stake are the projects of the  “ABC Loulé Health Research Center”, a center linked to research, health and science, and the Center Active Life (Vilamoura).

The Loulé Chamber accuses the Board of Directors of resorting, “in a fanatical and obstinate way, to the expedient of the court bar” to “question” the name of Nuno Marques and “all his work in favor of the Algarve”.

The municipality says that it bases this “public demonstration” of support for the president of ABC on the fact that his work is “recognized not only locally, but also nationally and internationally”.

“It was through the ABC that the first strategies and scientific studies came out to better understand and control the spread of the virus in the community. It was with ABC's proposals and collaboration that the SNS 24 line could significantly increase its response capacity throughout the country. ABC also took the initiative to implement the first pooling to optimize the number of tests carried out on Covid-19», recalls the Câmara de Loulé.

The Municipality also defends that it was “the idea of the ABC to develop innovative approaches and a very efficient response to monitor and control the pandemic in nursing homes in the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo”.

This position comes after Vítor Aleixo, mayor of Loulé, also have already condemned the attitude of the CHUA yesterday.

At issue, in this second lawsuit brought by the Board of Directors to Nuno Marques, are statements, from January 2021, in relation to the 30 fans, purchased by ABC in China, with money from AMAL - Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve, but which didn't work.

Nuno Marques does not resign, but, due to this controversy, he considers that it becomes ««unbearable to continue working» at ABC, a consortium that, in addition to CHUA, also integrates the University of the Algarve, an entity that, in this disagreement, has already on the “side” of the Algarve Biomedical Center.
