Cacela Velha once again welcomes Campo Escola de Arqueologia

Works run until July 15th

old cacelle once again welcomes the Campo Escola de Arqueologia for a project that began this Monday, June 20, and has as its objective «the scientific investigation into the history of the inhabitants of Cacela and its territory between the Islamic Period, the Christian Conquest and the formation of the Kingdom of Algarve, in the twelfth to fourteenth centuries». 

The works will take place until the 15th of July in this locality of the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, and aim to provide the practical component of archaeological and anthropological research to university students.

This year, «the excavation of the Almóada neighborhood of Poço Antigo and the Medieval Necrópole of the Ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires de Cacela will continue» and «a new area is also being prepared by the municipal services, in Várzea Norte, to An archaeological survey can be carried out there», emphasizes the VRSA City Council in a statement sent to the newsrooms.

The Archeology team is made up of undergraduate and master's students from the University of Algarve and Simon Fraser University (Canada), doctoral students from these Universities and the University of Coimbra, with the participation of a student from the University of Évora.

This archaeological excavation is part of the multi-annual Archeology project «Muslims and Christians in Medieval Cacela: territory and changing identities», approved in 2017 by the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC), having received extraordinary support from this entity.

The scientific coordination of the project is by Maria João Valente (professor at the University of Algarve and specialist in archaeozoology), Cristina Tété Garcia (senior technician at the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and specialist in Medieval Archeology) and Hugo Cardoso (professor at Simon Fraser University and specialist in Bioanthropology).

This initiative stems from the Collaboration Protocol established between the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, the University of the Algarve and the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António and also counts with the collaboration of the National Republican Guard (Coastal Control Unit) and the Parish from Cacela.

Those interested in getting to know the archaeological activity of Cacela and its results can sign up for the visit route, which will take place on the 9th of July, at 18:00, within the scope of the cultural program «Passos Contados» of the Vila Real de Vila Real City Council. Visits to the public will again be possible on the 11th of July, from 9 am to 00 pm, on the occasion of the Archaeological Field Open Day.
