Algarve and Baixo Alentejo under yellow warning due to hot weather

This weekend, temperatures in the district of Beja may reach 40ºC and in Faro at 34ºC

Temperatures will rise this long weekend, reaching 40ºC in Alentejo, and therefore the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) puts almost the entire country on yellow warning.

In the Algarve, where the maximum temperature until Sunday, June 12th, can reach 34ºC, the yellow hot weather warning is valid between 12:00 on Thursday, the 9th, and 18:00 on Saturday, the 11th.

In Baixo Alentejo, where the highs on Sunday reach 40ºC, the yellow warning starts on Friday, the 10th, at 9:00 am, and extends until Saturday, the 11th, at 18:00.

In a statement sent to the newsrooms, the IPMA emphasizes that “between the 9th and 13th of June in mainland Portugal, a situation of hot weather is expected, due to a mass of tropical air coming from North Africa/Iberian Peninsula”.

Thus, the IPMA foresees «an increase in temperature values, especially the maximum, and on the 9th and 10th, reaching values between 30 and 35°C in most of the territory, with the highest values, around 40 °C, in Beira Baixa, Tagus valley and interior of Alentejo».

The Institute also emphasizes that on the 13th the trend points to a drop in temperature values, especially the maximum, between 2 and 5°C, which should extend to the next day.

«The minimum temperature should rise on the 10th, with tropical nights expected (Tmin>20 °C) in the interior, especially in the Center and South, and in the Eastern Algarve», the note also reads.
