UAlg launches pioneering master’s degree in “Biodiversity, Fisheries and Marine Conservation”

This course, taught in English, includes a professional internship that can be carried out at the students' employers or at other institutions.

The University of the Algarve (UAlg) will open, from the 16th of May, applications for a new master's degree in “Biodiversity, Fisheries and Marine Conservation”.

According to UAlg, this professional master's degree, a pioneer in the area in Portugal, "will be carried out at the Faculty of Science and Technology of, in collaboration with partner institutions that develop graduate education activities, employers and other public and private entities operating in these areas" .

Dedicated to the promotion of lifelong learning, this master's degree arises from the need to promote in the labor market professionals with knowledge and technical skills in areas related to the management of the marine and coastal environment and the use of scientific information, which allow to ensure the development sustainability and the conservation of species and habitats, benefiting humanity and the balance of ecosystems.

This course, taught in English, includes a professional internship that can be carried out in the student's employers or in other institutions suited to the objectives of professional practice.

«The teaching part of the course will be practical and very focused on the needs of the job market, on the valorization of available information on marine and coastal biodiversity and on obtaining new data that allow establishing baselines and evaluating their evolution, supporting decision-making. scientifically based decision to guarantee the sustainable management of the coast and the marine environment», says the UAlg.

It is also intended to develop skills that help in professional progression and innovation in areas that involve the use of biological and oceanographic information for the understanding, management and conservation of marine biodiversity and for interactions with fisheries and global changes.

«This course aims to respond to needs and gaps identified by employers in these areas and in regions with which the University of Algarve has links, partnerships and research projects», highlights the Algarve academy.

The established objectives focus on conservation measures and sustainable management of marine biodiversity exploration activities, conservation, mitigation and restoration of threatened marine species and habitats, and the integration of forecasts of the effects of climate change and other environmental changes.
