O Route n.º 1 of the Literary Route Levantado do Chão it was covered on the 30th of April, in Lisbon and Montemor-o-Novo, in a partnership between the Alentejo Municipality, the José Saramago Foundation and the Aljube Museum.

The route addresses moments of the homonymous work by José Saramago related to the arrests, torture and murders of the dictatorial regime on the Alentejo people. In Lisbon, the character João Mau-Tempo is highlighted, while in Montemor-o-Novo Germano Vidigal and José Adelino dos Santos are highlighted.

The Pedestrian Route in Lisbon, called “João Mau-Tempo: Resistance and Freedom”, began at the José Saramago Foundation, where travelers from Montemor-o-Novo met travelers from Lisbon. Here, they were invited to get to know the author's life and work, guided by Sérgio Letria, director of the Foundation.

The rest of the tour took up memories of the arrests and torture inflicted on João Mau-Tempo by the Estado Novo regime, with emphasis on a visit to the Aljube Museum, by Francisco Ruivo, who gave a detailed presentation of the various stages of the Regime and the Chain, establishing a direct relationship with João Mau-Tempo, Germano Vidigal and José Adelino dos Santos.

O route also retraced the first steps in freedom of the character, after six months in the prisons of Caxias and Aljube, passing through Praça do Comércio and Estação do Terreiro do Paço.

The group of travelers then proceeded to Montemor-o-Novo, where the “Percurso Pedestre Germano Vidigal e José Adelino dos Santos” began.

At the Municipal Archive, the travelers were received by the coordinator Idalete Lebre, who invited the group to visit the Archive and visit the Agrarian Reform Archive and Documentation Center.

Nuno Cacilhas and Joana Sofio, technicians from the Municipality, accompanied the travelers through the remaining points of the Route. H

There is still time for a stop at the Cineteatro Curvo Semedo and, in the celebration of the 11th anniversary of the group Coral Fora d`Oras, the Alentejo cante was heard in the Roteiro.

At the end of the day, next to the Monument to José Adelino dos Santos, Gertrudes Calção shared some memories of her childhood, which well reflect the difficulties described in the various episodes of the work Levantado do Chão.
