Olhão takes another step towards the requalification of the Fuzeta lifeguard station

A preliminary study of the work, now completed, is essential for the building to pass to the scope of the Câmara de Olhão

The preliminary study of the requalification project of the old Fuzeta lifeguard station, with a view to the musealization of this emblematic building, has already been completed, in what was another step towards the transfer of this heritage to the scope of the Câmara de Olhão.

The building belongs to the Directorate-General for Heritage, so the “Preliminary Architectural Study of the Rehabilitation and Musealization Project of the Building of the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos da Fuzeta” is “essential for the process”.

The document “results from a first thorough assessment of the state of conservation of the most iconic building in the town, during which, through the use of the most modern technologies, a diagnosis and assessment of its state of conservation, both structural and constructive, was carried out. », describes the municipality of Olhão.

«The preliminary study, presented by the architects to the mayor, António Miguel Pina, and to the councilor for Public Works, Ricardo Calé, has now been sent to the entities that have the guardianship of the lifeguard, so that its possession is definitively , transferred to the municipality, which, only then, can proceed with the intervention», he adds.

The requalification of the historic building «provides for its structural repair, architectural and functional rehabilitation and subsequent transformation of that space into a museum pole that, under the auspices of the Municipal Museum of Olhão, will become the Interpretive Center for Landscape and Heritage».

The Fuzeta Castaway Aid Station was built during the Estado Novo, in the second half of the 1996th century. In XNUMX, the keys were handed over by the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos to the Directorate-General for State Heritage, having been closed since then.

The uniqueness of its implementation in the interior of the Ria Formosa and the modernist avant-garde design, together with the esteem that the population of Fuseta and the entire county have for the most outstanding building in the town's landscape, make the municipality have put its hands on the rehabilitation work for the lifeguard, and give it new life as a meeting point for culture, heritage, ethnography and memory.
