86 beaches in the Algarve and 34 in the Alentejo have «Gold Quality» in the bathing season that starts tomorrow, June 1st, announced Quercus.
On the eve of the start of the bathing season, Quercus (National Association for Nature Conservation) released a list of the 440 beaches distinguished at national level, a record figure in the history of this award that assesses the quality of national bathing waters.
In total, 47 more beaches were distinguished compared to 2021, with the Center region registering the highest increase (23 beaches).
In the Algarve, 84 coastal beaches were distinguished, one inland (river) and another in a transition zone (estuary). In Alentejo, the highlight was 27 coastal beaches and 23 inland.
Analyzing by region, the Algarve was the second with the highest number of awarded beaches (86) after the Tejo e Oeste Region (103). The Alentejo Region recorded an increase of 26%.
The classification of “Beach with Golden Quality” is attributed taking into account the excellent water quality in the last four bathing seasons from 2017 to 2020; all analyzes carried out in the last bathing season (2021), which should have presented better results than the values defined for the 95th percentile of Annex I of the Bathing Water Directive; and, in the last bathing season (2021), there was no occurrence/warning of discouraging bathing, prohibition of bathing and/or temporary ban on the beach.
