“What is Peace made of?” is the motto of Europe Day in Monchique

The program of celebrations in this Algarve municipality has already started at the end of April and ends on the 10th

“What is Peace made of? Europe Day 2022” is the theme of the seminar that will take place on May 10 at the Monchique School Group, which will address important topics for the empowerment of young people, such as human rights, policies and opportunities for European youth. and the role of volunteering in environmental and social sustainability.

This is the way to mark, this year in Monchique, Europe Day, which is celebrated on the 9th of May. The program of celebrations in this Algarve municipality has already started at the end of April and ends on the 10th.

After the conference, the artistic path resulting from the creative workshops will be inaugurated, starting at the Manuel Nascimento Basic School and stopping at Largo Comendador José Joaquim Agoas, Largo da Misericórdia and the Parish Council of Monchique, ending in the exterior of the Ludoteca Study Room.

In the afternoon, the program is for all ages, including skateboarding demonstrations by the Wallride Association and an environmental volunteer action with APA-ARHAlgarve and Associação A Nossa Terra.

Europe Day, celebrated on May 9, was born by decision of the Milan European Council of June 28 and 29, 1985 and was celebrated for the first time in 1986.

Initially aimed at the school community, Europe Day is one of the symbols of the European Union (EU) and currently constitutes the motto for the promotion of activities that seek to bring Europe closer to citizens.

This year, in the Algarve. the celebrations start in Faro on the 9th, with a conference-debate on Climate Change, and continue in Monchique, on the 10th, taking Europe to the region, in partnership with local authorities, the educational community, non-governmental environmental organizations, civil society and the associative movement.

The pilot project “Europe, Youth and Art” and the motto “What is Peace made of?” are the centerpiece of this commemoration in the territory in the European Year of Youth.

It resulted from a challenge launched by the Jacques Delors European Information Center to partners in the region, namely Europe Direct Algarve, Vicentina – Associação para o Desenvolvimento do Sudoeste, the Municipality of Monchique, the Agrupamento de Escolas de Monchique (AEM), the University of the Algarve, through its European Documentation Center, and ISMAT – Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes, and aims to motivate young people and the local community where they live for a lively debate on the founding values of the European Union and, above all, on the importance of Peace, raising awareness of the exercise of citizenship based on the values of freedom, justice and solidarity.

For all the entities involved in this partnership, it was unanimous that, in 2022, this initiative should pay tribute to the Ukrainian people and their struggle for the defense and affirmation of the values of democracy.

Thus took shape the idea of creating an artistic path in the village of Monchique centered on traditional Ukrainian arts, inspired by the work of renowned artist Maria Prymachenko.

Thus, spaces for reflective, artistic and entrepreneurial expression will be created, whose objective is to promote reflection and debate on the role of art in the expression of values for an inclusive and solidary citizenship.

In this context, several activities are underway in Monchique based on the binomial knowledge/artistic expression, with the aim of creating spaces for creative expression so that young people can express their values through art.

On the 28th of April, the Monchique School Group hosted the workshop “Expressing Europe through Art and Values”, aimed at 9th grade students, having been developed with 38 students and their teachers an inspirational session on European citizenship and the role of art in expressing the values of peace.

From the 4th to the 7th of May, young people are once again the protagonists of creative workshops on the theme “To (r)activate European Citizenship”. In order to stimulate artistic creation for the expression of citizenship values, the young people will be guided by the artist Joana Bandeira Rocha to create an artistic path in the village of Monchique, inspired by the work of the Ukrainian painter Maria Prymachenko.

On the 10th, there will be the culmination of all these initiatives, with the above mentioned program.

Europe Day 2022 in the Algarve is a joint initiative of CCDR Algarve, Europe Direct Algarve, Operational Program CRESC ALGARVE 2020, in partnership with AMAL, University of Algarve, municipalities of Faro and Monchique, Vincentian Association, Philharmonic Association of Faro and Grupo Coral Ossónoba.
