Anticyclone is responsible for the May heat wave

Between the 8th and 10th of May, the average values of the maximum temperature on the continent were above 28ºC, reveals IPMA

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warned this Wednesday, May 11, of the heat wave of the month, noting that the weather has been conditioned by an anticyclone located to the west of the Azores archipelago.

According to the IPMA, «between the 4th and 10th of May, there have been high values of the maximum air temperature, much higher than the normal values for this month». Highlights include the 8th, 9th and 10th, with average values of the maximum temperature on the continent above 28 °C – which «corresponds to deviations greater than 7 °C in relation to the average monthly value for May».

In relation to the minimum air temperature, the IPMA also mentions that values were lower or close to normal in the first days of the month, «with an increase starting on the 7th of May, with emphasis on the 9th and 10th, with deviations greater than 1.5 °C'.

For the next few days, it is expected «the continuation of maximum and minimum air temperature values above the monthly normal value, with the 14th registering the highest average value on the continent, however on the 15th and 16th it is expected a drop in temperature, especially the maximum», adds the institute.

In this period, the IPMA emphasizes that the highest values of maximum air temperature were recorded in places in the Douro valley, Tagus valley and Alentejo regions.

Until Saturday, the IPMA predicts that the maximum temperature in Faro reach 29ºC and in Beja at 33ºC.
