Albufeira will promote the “Walk on the Algarvensis: A History with Millions of Years” in its most recent pedestrian route, called Planalto do Escarpão (PR4 ABF), on the 29th, Sunday, at 9:00 am.

The meeting point for this easy walk (level II) of eight kilometers, lasting approximately three hours, is at Paderne Castle.

The initiative takes place within the scope of the European Geoparks Week, which runs from the 21st of May to the 6th of June, and in an integrated way with the project of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis.

Those who participate in this walk will «be able to discover the only place in the eastern Algarve where it is possible to observe one of the most complete sequences of sediments accumulated in the Tethys Ocean in the Upper Jurassic (161,2 to 145,5 million years), which gave rise to the Atlantic Ocean Central, as well as getting to know the hinterland and the county's trails», according to the Albufeira Chamber.

To get to know this ancient ocean, «comfortable and appropriate footwear for the activity, water and sunscreen» is recommended.

The action is free and registration is mandatory, which must be done until the 26th of May, via email [email protected] or telephone 289599540. Hikers must indicate their full name, date of birth and tax identification, for the purpose of personal accident insurance. The activity is limited to a total of 20 participants.

«The aspiring Algarvensis Geopark is a territorial area with a geological heritage of great importance located in the Algarve region. The project combines the development of the Algarve interior through the promotion of geotourism activities with geoconservation and a set of education and environmental awareness policies», states the municipality.

The “Walk in the Algarvensis: A History with Millions of Years”, is an initiative of the aspiring Geopark Algarvensis, organized in partnership with the Albufeira City Council, constituting a regional landmark in the celebrations of this year's European Geoparks Week.
