CMR Sul has been physically rehabilitating patients from six southern districts for 15 years

Center has gone through difficult periods over the years

The Centro Medicina Física e Reabilitação do Sul (CMR Sul), in São Brás de Alportel, turns 15 today, during which it treated and rehabilitated thousands of people from six districts, but also faced great difficulties.

The unit that was born on the site where the former Carlos Vasconcelos Porto Sanatorium operated is currently «a reference unit in the area of intensive rehabilitation and specialized care that aims to promote interdisciplinary rehabilitation in situations that require prolonged and complex interventions», according to Centro Hospitalar. University of the Algarve, in which the São Brasense health unit is currently integrated.

CMR Sul started its activity as a public-private partnership (PPP) in 2007, but ended up moving to the Algarve Regional Health Administration in 2013, after the Court of Auditors had failed to renew the agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Galilei Group.

In the years that followed, the health unit faced difficulties in terms of staff, that prevented it from operating at its maximum capacity, mainly in terms of inpatient beds. In 2017, it joined the CHUA, which allowed, in the following years, to overcome many of the problems that the CMR Sul was struggling with.

But it was only in 2021, during the pandemic, that the CMR Sul returned to work in full.

In 2020 and 2021, the CMR Sul, which is intended to “receive patients with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, cerebrovascular accidents and other neurological, rheumatological, orthopedic, cardiovascular and pneumological pathologies”, held “6.306 consultations” and «40.052 outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic procedures», followed «384 inpatients» and followed «2.031 outpatients» in the six districts of the south of the country for which it is the reference unit.

«Composed of a multidisciplinary team made up of 136 professionals from different areas of health and support for all clinical, rehabilitation and service operation support, the Centro de Medicina Física e Reabilitação do Sul provides External Medical Consultations of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Internal Medicine and Neurology and has the consultancy of the hospital services provided by CHUA», according to the hospital centre.

It also provides «technical and specialized support in the area of diagnosis and therapy in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Dietetics and Nutrition, Psychology, Pharmacy, Radiology and has technicians from Social Service, IT, Operational Assistants, Technical Assistants, Senior Technicians , Doctors, Interns of Specific Training, Nurses and Managers».

The CHUA Board of Directors took the opportunity to “congratulate and thank the work of all the professionals who throughout all these years have contributed to the creation, development and projection in the area of intensive rehabilitation of the 6 districts in the south of the country”.
