The 13st Nautical and Underwater History and Archeology Symposium of Lagos, in which the research carried out on the coast of Lacobrigensia will be presented, will take place on the 15th of April, from 00:XNUMX, in the Auditorium Paços do Concelho Séc. XXI, in that city.

The joint initiative of the Institute of Archeology and Paleosciences (IAP) of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Nova University of Lisbon (History, Territories and Communities of the Center for Functional Ecology – Science for People and the Planet) and the Lagos City Council results from the protocol established in 2016 for the study, dissemination, safeguarding and enhancement of heritage.

Indeed, for centuries, the fort and the town of Lagos functioned as a support point for navigation, which sometimes climbed, sometimes sailed along the western Algarve, in an area that stretched from Odeceixe to beyond Portimão.

Battles, storms, fog, errors of course and attacks by privateers led to the grounding, collision or sinking of hundreds of ships.

In addition to archival documentation, all these ship losses generated potential underwater cultural heritage sites, submerged monuments, today with high scientific, heritage and tourist value.

This first symposium will reflect on the research carried out so far, sharing the results with the community. In addition, it intends to make science produced in the Algarve region increasingly open and accessible, and the Database of Historical Shipwrecks of the Western Algarve by Alexandre Monteiro is also publicly presented.

With free admission, the event will be opened by Hugo Pereira, president of the Lagos City Council, and by Rosa Varela Gomes, director of IAP. The presentations will focus on the “Balance of the work carried out from 2006 to 2008 in Lagos and new perspectives” (Filipe Castro) and “Underwater Cultural Heritage of the contemporary period: The Second World War in Algarve waters” (Paulo Costa).
