Three Portuguese tennis players win at the start of the 12th Loulé Open

Gonçalo Falcão, Afonso Portugal and Ricardo Batista debuted this Sunday, March 13, with victories in the 12th edition of the Loulé Open, an international tournament worth US$25.

On the first day of the tournament, Gonçalo Falcão — 1415th in the ATP ranking and the only Portuguese player among the seeds — recorded an authoritative triumph (6-0 and 6-1) against w American Dhruva Mulye to arrange a meeting with Mikel Martínez, a Spaniard who beat Portuguese Henry Salonen 6-0 and 6-0.

Ricardo Batista also advanced convincingly, justifying the invitation given to him by the organization by beating the Spaniard David Muñoz by 6-1 and 6-2.

The 18-year-old Portuguese youngster's next opponent will be Alberto Barroso Campos, a Spaniard who defends his status as the first seed in the qualifying and beat Israeli Ben Weintraub 6-0 6-3.

Afonso Portugal faced a more balanced match, but prevailed over compatriot André Stewart by 7-6 and 6-3 to complete the trio of Portuguese representatives qualified for the second of three rounds. On Monday he will face Joshua Paris, 13th pre-designated who imposed the partials of 6-4 and 6-3 to Miguel Gomes.

In the remaining matches of the day, Illia Stoliar, Martim Simões, Tiago Sousa, Rodrigo Beires, Tomás Tenil, Miguel Simão, Guilherme Silva, Tomás Martins, Bernardo Teixeira and William Binnie were unable to move on and said goodbye to the Loulé Open.
