The 5th edition of Scianema, a film festival dedicated to the ocean, will take place from the 3rd to the 5th of March, at Teatro Lethes, in Faro, in an organization of Sciaena, Portuguese marine conservation NGO.

Scianema, which is dedicated to films related to “the preservation of the ocean, public awareness and education regarding the main threats that the seas face, and what can be done to recover and protect the beings that inhabit them”, takes place in Faro, «being increasingly a milestone in the cultural agenda of the city that has hosted this festival since the beginning in 2016».

This, which is the only environmental film festival exclusively dedicated to the ocean, in Portugal, takes place for the first time at Teatro Lethes, an iconic space in the Algarve capital, on the nights of March 3, 4 and 5, at 21 pm.

This event has free admission and on the big screen is presented «a variety of films and themes that will surprise, create debate and change our perception of the marine world».

Each night, in addition to the chosen films, there is also space for a brief debate with specialists of each theme and with the filmmakers themselves, with whom the public can interact, question and think about the sea and the place of each one in its own. protection.

The first session of Scianema is at 21 pm on Thursday, the 00rd, with the screening of the film “Picture a Scientist” by Sharon Shattuck and Ian Cheney. This film, which arrives from the USA, analyzes the path of women in science over the last few decades, and the inequalities, pressures and abuses they have been subjected to.

«It is a moment of confrontation with a reality that has remained hidden for many decades, which we will have the opportunity to discuss after the film with researcher Lisa Borges, a specialist in fisheries science for over 25 years, who will give us her perspective on this reality. nationally and globally”, explains the organization.

On the second day of the festival, Cineclube de Faro takes the helm of programming, having chosen the film "If the sea lets”, by Luís Alves de Matos – a cross between the eyes of a man coming from the city and a man from the sea who inhabits a fishing village, in a session that will count with the presence of the director.

The 5th edition of Scianema ends on Saturday, the 5th, on a night dedicated to the Ria Formosa, its people, biodiversity and respective threats, with the screening of two documentaries filmed in this incredible coastal area.

First, «we dived to meet the seahorses of the Ria Formosa with the film »War Horses” by João Rodrigues, and the fight to protect what was once the largest population of these beings in the world».

Afterwards, «we will have the world premiere of the documentary»From Breech”, by director Ana Monteiro, who will give us a unique perspective on Culatra Island and the daily life of its community, the way it evolved and how it intends to evolve. To close, we will have a conversation with both directors to talk about their perceptions and experiences in Ria Formosa».

«It was a challenge to continue our public-facing events over the last two years, so we are very proud to be able to return to the physical world, and above all to hold this event for the first time at the incredible Lethes Theater», says Nicolas Blanc, from Sciaena, about the event.

«It is natural that there has been a slight disconnection from the public regarding nature and the ocean, given the enormous adversities we have been going through, but it is of great importance to share these films, which show us the beauty of the ocean, but also the threats it faces, and what we can do as individuals but above all as a society to limit our impacts and restore the health of our seas”, he concluded.

In addition to the Lethes Theater and the Cineclube de Faro, this edition has a partnership with the Associação Recreativa e Cultural de Músicos, the Center for Marine Sciences, the Center for Marine and Environmental Research, the Erasmus Student Network Algarve, the Municipality of Faro, Sociedade Recreativa Artística Farense and RUA FM.
