Tavira brings together Catholics and Greek-Catholic Ukrainians to celebrate Holy Week

«Believers and non-believers, Catholics and members of other religious denominations, all citizens, nationals or foreigners, visitors or residents, are invited to participate in these moments of prayer»

The Holy Week celebrations in Tavira will have, this year, the involvement of the Algarve Ukrainian community, with “several moments of prayer for peace”.

Some of the highlights of the Easter festivities in Tavira are its processions and the Ukrainian community will participate in them.

This is the case of the Palm Sunday procession, which takes place on the 10th of April, at 17:00, leaving the Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. One of the litters will be carried by members of the Ukrainian community.

On Good Friday, the 15th, at 21:00 pm, the Procession of the Burial of the Lord will take place, which will leave the Igreja da Misericórdia.

One of the litters will be decorated with sunflowers, flowers that represent Ukraine, with members of the Algarve community present and the ceremonies being led, not only by the parish priest of Tavira, but by Father Oleg Trushko, assistant to the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic community in the region.

“Our young people will wear a banner that will signal our desire to be in union with Ukraine, to pray with its People, as the Holy Father and our Bishop ask us to do”, emphasizes Father Miguel Neto, parish priest of Tavira.

“We also invite everyone who will participate to bring something with them – a ribbon, an outfit, whatever you want – that has the colors of Ukraine. It will be another way of being in tune, feeling this Easter as a special time, a time to ask God for the peace that the world needs and that may be lacking, as we now realize, at any time».

On Easter Sunday, April 17, the Resurrection Procession will take place, which will leave the Church of S. Paulo at 10:00 am and travel through the center of Tavira.

«In other places in the Algarve, this procession is also known as the flower procession, so I leave one more challenge: that those who participate bring yellow and blue flowers», asks Father Miguel Neto.

“Let us pray for the city of Tavira, but also for the martyred cities of Ukraine, such as Mariupol, for the people who have nothing, for those who are sick and for those who have died, so that Christ can guarantee their resurrection, which is celebrated on Easter day” , adds.

“Believers and non-believers, Catholics and members of other religious denominations, all citizens, nationals or foreigners, visitors or residents, are invited to participate in these moments of prayer”, he concludes.
