The results of the research project “IMiST – Improving mixing in reservoirs for safer water supply”, which included the participation of Águas do Algarve, will be presented on Friday, the 25th, at a online seminar scheduled for 14:30 pm.

The multi-municipal water supply and sanitation company in the Algarve supported the project, which also involved the Instituto Superior Técnico and the Intermunicipalized Water and Sanitation Services of Oeiras and Amadora, “through a case study”.

«The objective of the project was to study the flow dynamics in water reservoirs for human consumption (speeds, water paths, distribution of residence times, degree of mixing, temperature stratification and chlorine decay, among others), in order to in order to obtain guidelines for the project, operation and its rehabilitation», explained Águas do Algarve.

The project, which is funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, has been running since October 2018. In 2019, the IST team made a field visit to Águas do Algarve to verify the application of the company's Case Study in the case of the Algoz Eastern Initial Reservoir.

In 2021 «the field campaign of the case study was carried out, namely in May, with on-site measurements by the IST team, namely the variation of water quality in the initial Oriental reservoir in Algoz, by changing the proportion of the percentage of groundwater treated, which made it possible to verify, in real time, the way in which the water flow occurs in the reservoir from the entrance to its exit and to verify possible points of greater residence of the water. The project results were presented in a dissertation thesis in January 2022».
