The first meeting of the participants of the SciTour research project took place last Wednesday, the 23rd, at the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos (CCVL), a promoting entity, in partnership with the University of Algarve.

The SciTour Project will work as a bridge between Education, Science, Communication and Tourism, that is, a unifying element between these areas of knowledge.

According to its promoters, «SciTours is, therefore, a research project that explores and develops the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Western Algarve as a product of Scientific Tourism, in the areas of Geology, Paleontology, Archeology and Marine Biodiversity, since these are the areas that have the greatest potential in our area of intervention. These are sustainable resources that are currently undervalued, underdeveloped and underutilized».

The principal investigator is Luís Azevedo Rodrigues, executive director of the CCVL, with Cláudia Henriques, from CINTOURS at the University of Algarve, as co-principal researcher.

Participating in this research project, in addition to the team from the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos and the University of Algarve, the Universities of Lisbon and Minho and a researcher from the University of Aveiro.

Tourism is the most significant industry in the region, the Algarve already benefits from the existence of accessibility and infrastructure for visitors, which facilitates the implementation and development of Scientific Tourism as a new product that helps to diversify the current offer and to counteract the seasonality of the tourism, being sustainable throughout the year and suitable for the domestic and foreign markets.

The research team envisages a practical approach that integrates a broader strategy for Science Tourism, Science Communication and the dissemination of scientific content. This new approach has gathered the interest and support of local municipalities, operators, the Algarve Tourism Region and other stakeholders. The collective objective is to carry out the research, develop the tools and produce.

This research project is supported by FEDER Funds through the CRESC Algarve 2020 program. SciTour – ALG-01-0145-FEDER-072585.
