Lagos celebrates the environment with a “Green Week”

The initiative will have as its motto “Ecosystem Recovery”

Lagos will have a “Green Week” during which it wants to involve the entire community in initiatives to encourage the preservation of the planet, between the 21st and 25th of March.

With the motto “Ecosystem Recovery”, this initiative aims to celebrate World Tree Day (21 March) and World Water Day (22 March).

The start of the Lagos Green Week is scheduled for March 21, at 10:00 am, next to the Parque Bio Saudável in Parque da Cidade, and the hoisting of the Green Flag awarded by ABAE at the Santa Maria School in under the Eco Schools program.

The celebrations will count on «the involvement of volunteers, users of the homes of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lagos, Sapadores Florestais and the school community (about 1149 students from public and private schools from pre-school to secondary), namely in the various actions of tree plantations in the municipality", according to the Lagos Chamber.

These actions will take place in the city of Lagos (Parque da Cidade, Avenida Paul Harris, Estrada da Meia Praia, Estrada da Abrótea, Urb. Cerro das Mós and inside the Health Center), Odiáxere (Largo da Alegria), Chinicato (area surrounding the school) and Bensafrim (next to Estrela Desportiva de Bensafrim), as well as inside the secondary schools Júlio Dantas and Gil Eanes, Tecnopolis and Centro Escolar da Luz and the homes of Odiáxere, Barão de S. João and Espiche.

Also with regard to the school public, as part of the Pollinators Week, the Mini Exhibition “Insects in order” will be inaugurated at the Júlio Dantas Secondary School Library, an initiative of TAGIS with the support of the municipality and the A Rocha Association.

«The users of Santa Casa da Misericórdia homes (Espiche, Bensafrim and Maria Francisca Fialho Residences) will play a key role in promoting this week's message, with the challenge being launched to prepare informative panels to raise awareness of the reuse of materials and preservation of nature, which will be exhibited at the Santo Amaro Market. In addition, poems alluding to the dates and a video with a song, “A Primavera”, sung by users, were also created, which will be shared on the Facebook page of the municipality of Lagos during that week.

The Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos will also join this week, promoting free environmental awareness and education activities, more specifically the “Paint with Chlorophyll” initiative.

As part of its candidacy for the ECO Freguesias XXI Project, the Parish Council of S. Gonçalo will promote actions to identify native tree species in Parque da Cidade (March 24), in collaboration with the municipal green space services and the school community.

Also on display at the Armazém Regimental, between the 25th and 31st of March, are three exhibitions: “Native Trees of Portugal”, by ABAE, “Treasures of Portugal”, by the Lagos Zoo, and some works by users of Santa Casa da Misericórdia. .
