Faro will not be European Capital of Culture in 2027

Announcement has just been made at a press conference in Lisbon

Faro did not go to the next stage of the process of choosing the European Capital of Culture in 2027, has just been announced at a press conference that took place in Lisbon.

The Algarve candidacy, which was defended on Wednesday by the team of Faro2027, did not convince the international jury of the competition, which chose Aveiro, Braga, Évora and Ponta Delgada as finalists.

Despite not having taken a step forward, and as highlighted by the Mayor Rogério Bacalhau, Bruno Inácio, coordinator of the Faro 2027, and several members of the team, even before the proposal was presented to the jury, the path taken until that moment had already been enriching and will bear fruit in the future.

A good example is the transformation planned for Vila-Adentro de Faro, which will go ahead regardless of the decision taken today.

Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Faro, Funchal, Guarda, Leiria, Oeiras, Ponta Delgada, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real were the 12 candidates to be European Capital of Culture in 2027.

The applications were evaluated by a jury that included representatives of the European Parliament, the European Council, the European Commission, the Committee of the Regions and the Ministry of Culture of Portugal.
