ISMAT students present a strategic proposal for the regeneration and dynamization of the center of Portimão

Proposal developed by the Degree in Communication Design

The Communication Design degree at ISMAT will present, in partnership with the Parish Council of Portimão, a strategic proposal for the regeneration and dynamization of the city centre.

The presentation will take place on March 21, at 18:00 pm, in the ISMAT Auditorium, with the presence of Maria da Luz Santana, president of that Parish Council, as well as guests from governance institutions.

ISMAT explains that «within the scope of curricular activities, developed in the Communication Design Degree, every year we develop a project with a local partner in sprint challenge mode».

If, two years ago, the project developed gave rise to the brand of the Parish Council of Alvor, e. last year. to three service proposals for the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve, «this year we explored the urban dynamics where ISMAT is inserted and, together with the Portimão Parish Council, we challenged Design students to develop a strategic proposal for the regeneration and dynamization of the center of Portimão».

The initiative took place between the 7th and 11th of March, in the former premises of the Parish Council and with the participation of various agents of the territory.

On the first day, the president of the Parish Council spoke, who expressed her opinion on the development of the city center and expressed her full support for the development of the project.

On the second day, the Design students «explored ethnographic dynamics of observation and questioning with the inhabitants and traders of the center of Portimão».

Dynamics were also held with some representatives of local commerce, through the Portimonense Association of Commerce and Services, with the presence of President José Pinto and local business owners", such as Ana Lúcia Caetano, from PTM DownTown, and Cláudia and Ion, from Gribbfarm, who presented the vision of how new investors look at the city.

The following day, the students analyzed the data collected in these sessions and in the online questionnaires, which had very good adherence.

In the last two days, key factors were identified that allowed the development of three different concepts, which led the students to build «an integrated strategy to activate the center of Portimão, with an innovative vision that could cover various economic domains in the region and broaden awareness of the ongoing social and technological transformation'.

The objective is “mainly to respond to the climate impact, through sustainability and reuse of resources, until the mitigation of the economic impact of the latest international events”.
