Albufeira creates 4 “artistic” 3×3 basketball courts to «bring sport to the street»

The Algarve council joined the “3×3 Basket Art” project

Four new 3×3 outdoor basketball courts, with an artistic nature, will be built in Vale de Faro, in Albufeira, with the aim of bringing this sport «back to the street», in an environment linked to urban art, with the signature of the local artist Asur.

The Câmara de Albufeira joined the “3×3 Basket Art” project, of the Portuguese Basketball Federation (FBP), an initiative that provides for the creation of outdoor basketball courts, “aimed at promoting physical activity, well-being and the informal basketball practice of all the inhabitants».

The adhesion of this Algarve municipality to the FPB project was announced at the presentation of yet another Youth Basketball Festival, which Albufeira will host between the 9th and 14th of April.

According to Manuel Fernandes, president of the FPB, «there are already 12 Basket Art fields in the country, but there are many more in the pipeline, around 80».

However, as José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, stressed, the Algarve council will be «the first in the country where there will be four courses – all the others have one or two fields».

«For our sport, it was important to get out of a closed place and bring basketball back to the street. It's about bringing sport to the street. This is what this project allows», continued Manuel Fernandes.

A competition is even planned, «a 3 to 3 championship, only for the municipalities adhering to this project».

Even so, these are not fields created with competition in mind – at least exclusively, since 3×3 basketball is already an Olympic sport.

«We have forms of use here that are also playful. These fields are open to everyone and I think this project will benefit the population, because they will have one more space to play sports. It's always enriching, our country really needs sports equipment», considered the president of the Portuguese Basketball Federation.

To install these new four courts, the space currently occupied by three tennis courts will be reconverted, in Vale de Faro, a green space located in a central area of Albufeira.

In addition to «removing the lighting towers from the center of the field and placing them at the ends», the intervention will include the placement of a new floor, in acrylic resin, since the existing one «is not suitable for this activity», according to Mónica Silva, coordinator of Outdoor Spaces at the Albufeira Chamber.

The project also includes the installation of sanitary equipment to support the fields and a changing room added to the bathroom.

The artistic and creative aspect associated with this project will be in charge of Asur, artistic name of Filipe Neves, from Albufeira, «known for his graffiti murals, which can be appreciated in various parts of the city and in various parts of the world», according to the Chamber. from Albufeira.
