Neto Gomes, journalist and writer from Vilareal, who was for many years the speaker of the Volta a Portugal by bicycle, and former cyclist Rogério Domingos will be honored by the Vila Real de Santo António City Council on the 19th, Saturday, «for their contributions to the promotion of sport in the county and for their dedication to the service of cycling» .
The tribute, which takes place on the day that the Volta ao Algarve passes through the city, is scheduled for 13 pm on Saturday, next to the race's starting area, on Avenida da República.
Neto Gomes was born in Vila Real de Santo António, on the 27th of October 1944, and has lived in Loulé for several years.
Although he has carried out various activities related to the tourism and sports sector and has held positions in public entities, «it is the connection to writing, and in particular to journalism, that serves as a guiding link throughout his professional life. He marked an epoch, still unparalleled today, as speaker of the Tour of Portugal by Bike».
Rogério Domingos was born on February 19, 1948. He was a cyclist at the Ginásio Clube de Tavira and is the owner of the Alpendre restaurant, a regional reference for fans of two wheels. He participated in several editions of the Volta a Portugal. Despite having competed professionally until 1968, he organized, over many years, several races not only in terms of training, but also in terms of promoting the sport.
The 48th Volta ao Algarve hit the road today and lasts until Sunday.
One of the novelties of this edition of the race «is the fourth stage, as it is the most extensive time trial in recent years and marks the return of the race to Vila Real de Santo António, a city that has not hosted a stage match since 2009».
This time trial will be 32,2 kilometers long, linking Vila Real de Santo António to Tavira. “By extension, it allows pure time trialists to manage the race – including the mountain stages – in order to place themselves among the favorites to triumph in the general”, according to the VRSA Chamber.
