Olympic sailors competed in Portugal Grand Prix in Vilamoura

Last day of competition confirmed the Polish duo Dominik Buksak and Szymon Wierzbicki as winners in the 49er class

Hundreds of Olympic sailors disputed the Portugal Grand Prix that ended this Wednesday, February 23, in Vilamoura.

The last day of competition confirmed Polish duo Dominik Buksak and Szymon Wierzbicki as winners in the 49er class, followed by Italians Uberto Crivelli Visconti and Giulio Calabrò.

With wind blowing from the east quadrant, between 7 and 16 knots, the winners were confirmed in the last regattas of the Portugal Grand Prix (Round 2).

In Nacra 17, the French Tim Mourniac and Lou Berthomieu ended up victorious, with the Danes Natacha Saouma-Pedersen and Mathias Borreskov in second place.

Johanne Schmidt and Andrea Schmidt won the Portugal Grand Prix in the 49er Fx class, having achieved the best performance in all four days of competition.

In the 470 class, the victory was Spanish, with the duo Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman in first place, followed by the British Martin Wrigley and Eilidh Mcintyre.

With the regatta fields set up very close to the coast, those who in the last few days enjoyed the Algarve sun, had the privilege of enjoying a unique show, with hundreds of candles in the water.

Vilamoura Sailing took advantage of the presence of hundreds of sailors of Olympic classes, who choose Vilamoura for their preparation, to carry out this event scoring for the World Ranking of the 49er, 49er Fx and Nacra 17 classes.

In the ILCA classes the winners were: Duko Bos (Netherlands) in ILCA 7, Marie Bolou (France) in ILCA 6 and Maarten Boot (Belgium) in ILCA 4.

«This is already the fourth edition of the Portugal Grand Prix. We are on the international circuit which is a huge achievement in four years. One of the events with which we compete directly is the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma de Mallorca, which has been in existence for 48 years, and this year, at the Portugal Grand Prix, in terms of participants, we were already at 80% of what will be expected in the Princess Sofia Trophy that will be held in a few weeks”, explains Nuno Reis, responsible for Vilamoura Sailing.

The attractive climate, with excellent sea and wind conditions for sailing, meant that close to 70 countries chose Vilamoura to prepare for their winter season.

With an increasing number of athletes, the training center reached its maximum capacity with the presence of about 400 sailors, from the most important teams in the world.

For Isolete Correia, administrator of Vilamoura World, the Vilamoura Sailing project is «a source of pride for Vilamoura Marina».
