University of Algarve coordinates EEA Grants project in the area of ​​blue growth

Project launch meeting took place last Friday, January 28

The University of Algarve (UAlg) coordinates a new EEA Grants project, in the area of ​​advanced training and its impact, with global funding of around 231 thousand euros, for the two-year implementation of the Blue Route project (Preparing the new OCEAN economy 2030: the Blue Route of discovery), financed by the Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway Grants program, managed by the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy of the Ministry of the Sea.

The partners' meeting to launch the project took place last Friday, January 28th, at the campus de Gambelas, in a hybrid system, with 12 participants in person and 28 online.

The Blue Route aims to «launch a new way to sustainably support blue growth in the global ocean», says UAlg.

«It is based on innovative doctoral training in the area of ​​marine sciences, economics and multilingual communication of knowledge, with the production of online and face-to-face modules, defined according to the needs of companies and institutions with an interest in highly qualified human resources. in the area of ​​blue knowledge».

This network is based on “scientific, cultural and commercial exchanges across the Atlantic and Indian oceans and coastal areas of Africa, Asia and South America”.

In addition to the University of Algarve, the project has «a key partner», the University of Tromso (Arctic University of Norway), as well as «other national institutions and companies.

They are the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere, the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos, the company MarTrain and the collaborative laboratory S2AQUA Colab, as well as international institutions and companies such as OLSPS, NIVA, Universidade Federal of Pernambuco (Brazil), Agostinho Neto University and Namibe University (Angola), São Tomé and Príncipe University, Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique, Ruhuna University, Matara, Sri Lanka and the University of Nagasaki, Japan.

Research topics are related to the global blue economy, including innovative fisheries, digitization and smart aquaculture, and communication between languages ​​and cultures.

The Blue Route project aims to «reposition Portugal along maritime routes, through the co-production of blue knowledge», highlights the UAlg.

This objective «will be achieved through the advanced training of various actors in the maritime economy sector, within the scope of the strategic alliance between Portugal and Norway».

«Blue Route will base its advanced interdisciplinary training aspect in flexible curricular units, including transversal competences, in a hybrid and multilingual teaching system to create synergies of educational resources between the participating institutions, which are distributed along the global ocean to build capacity on site", he concludes.
