Shadow puppet theater tells the «Epic of Gilgamesh» in Lagoa and Lagos

The Repeating Question and ARTIS XXI take to the stage the Epic of Gilgamesh, an astonishing spectacle where the spoken word and music narrate the story of the greatest Sumerian hero – Gilgamesh – through shadow puppets

The shadow puppet theater «The Epic of Gilgamesh», a show based on one of the oldest recorded epics, dating from 2000 BC, takes to the stages of Lagos and Lagoa, from the 18th to the 21st of February.

The show recounts the misadventures of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian hero, who could defeat any enemy in battle and even raise mountains. It is, according to its promoters, «a show about kindness and friendship», «a story that will enrapture you and where the puppets are the protagonists».

The story goes that Gilgamesh was part god, part human. When Gilgamesh, in his solitude, begins to mistreat the people of Uruk, the gods decide to intervene by sending a challenge: Enkidu, the wild man.

«Enkidu and Gilgamesh fight, but since neither can defeat the other, something surprising happens. And here the adventures begin!”

The epic of Gilgamesh is presented in the auditorium of the Centro Cultural de Lagos, on the 18th of February (only for schools) and then, the following day, at 16:00, for a show open to the general public.

In Lagoa, the Carlos do Carmo Auditorium will be presented, on February 20, at 16 pm, to the general public, and on the 00st, again only for schools.

The show is an original idea by Ana Falé, who is also responsible for the artistic direction, with the musical direction in charge of Elsa Santos Mathei, with puppeteer Jorge Soares, narration by Ana Falé and music by Ensemble Armilar. The Epic of Gilgamesh also counts with the participation in the development of musical pieces by the Algarve composer João Pacheco.

Theater co-produced by ARTIS XXI and Questão Repetida in one more bet to promote in the Algarve region and its people, the same access to culture as other regions of the country.
