Synopsis

It is said that after the arrival of the Chinese orange, in the Algarve, more precisely in Silves, the life of its people was never the same. It is said that even the peoples of the Almohad already disagreed over this beautiful, sweet and juicy fruit. Silves was on the map for its past linked to Moorish culture and customs, but nothing is equivalent to its reputation as the eternal capital of oranges.

But how did the sweet orange get to Portugal? In Portugal there were only bitter oranges, but once a Jesuit visited the Forbidden City in China and there he tasted the sweetest oranges he had ever eaten. Surprised by the sweetness, with great cunning, one day he stole a seedling inside his hollow staff. He managed to get out of there and returned to Lisbon where he planted this seedling. From then on, the dissemination of the fruit began, which arrived in the Algarve and took revenge as a symbol and primordial trade of Silves.

It is said among the people that this Jesuit man had the greatest cunning to pass the gates of the Forbidden City without anyone knowing anything, with the help of his hollow staff and his donkey that carried him everywhere. . The Forbidden City was a place inhabited only by the Emperor, his family and servants. Anyone who entered without permission was painfully punished. The risk that the Jesuit entered there, met the people of the palace and was graced with the sweet oranges and these one day arrived in Silves, are the motto for an animated story of puppet theatre.
