The project is part of the Agenda for the Energy Transition promoted by the Culatra 2030 Initiative – Sustainable Energy Community.

It is called “Responsible Culatra” and is the name of the project that is being developed by the Association of Residents of Ilha da Culatra (AMIC), in partnership with the Municipality of Faro, Make it Better, SCIAENA, the University of Algarve and the Parish Union of Faro, within the scope of the Healthy Neighborhoods Program.

As explained by AMIC, this is a project that aims to «train the Culatra community and organize residents, to foster social cohesion and promote full citizenship, based on the principles of participation and construction of solutions where the community feels comfortable. ».

The initiative also aims to “affirm a set of initiatives based on collective participation for the development of support systems for the promotion of social justice, the practical conditions of the fundamentals of the circular economy, the maintenance of activities that characterize the economic matrix of the fishing center and the strong connection to the management of resources and preservation of ecosystems», adds the residents' association.

The activities foreseen by the project include the promotion of social and territorial cohesion of the Culatra Fishing Nucleus, through the training of the community and local structures, by promoting the Culatra Social and Environmental Responsibility Fund, to support the fight against energy poverty, by strengthening the process of community participation and organization of residents, associative and cooperative movements and informal groups of citizens and for the promotion and operation of concepts and practices of circular and shared economy, based on the principles of sustainable management and sharing of resources, reduction of waste, valorization of socially and environmentally just economic activities.

The “Responsible Culatra” also intends to develop communication and information tools for citizens and visitors, through information campaigns and placing informative signs on ecosystems and environmental protection measures, focusing on the issue of the carrying capacity of the territory.
