Continuing to help find solutions to the economic and social problems facing the Algarve, while focusing on youth are the great banners of the new direction of the regional delegation of the Order of Economists, which took office on Friday , 4th of February, in Faro.

Luís Serra Coelho remains as president of the Algarve structure of this Order, but there is a change in the presidency of the Regional Assembly, which becomes Maria José da Encarnação and replaces, in office, Calçada Correia, who did not re-candidate.

In statements to the Sul Informação, on the sidelines of the session, Luís Serra Coelho explained the main goals of his direction for the four-year period 2022-2025.

“Our main objectives are twofold. The first is to continue, in essence, to consolidate the idea that the Order of Economists is present and that it has something to say to the region and also to learn from it”, he said.

The president of the Algarve regional directorate of the Order of Economists even speaks of a «symbiotic relationship», whose background is «always economic and social issues».

«Basically, we want to continue the way we have been discussing, bringing problems to the forefront and trying to find solutions, which is all we have been doing», he summarized.

«The other objective is to continue the work of rejuvenation of this Order of Economists not only for the sake of survival, but also because the younger crowd brings different ideas. This is very good when we have new problems and that, eventually, they have more capacity to analyze and understand”, he said.

Even so, and despite the fact that the Order of Economists, at the national level, is «very old», the Algarve delegation has many young elements.

«In the Algarve regional delegation, in recent years we have had a membership of young people between 22 and 27 years old. Although I don't have data to say that it has the most young people nationwide, it seems to me clearly that our rejuvenation process is perhaps faster than in other parts of the country», believes Luís Serra Coelho.

The inauguration of the bodies of the regional delegation was attended by António Mendonça, the new Chairman of the Order of Economists, as well as Francisco Murteira Nabo, chairman of the Bureau of the Assembly of Representatives of the institution, and José Apolinário, chairman of the Coordination Committee and Regional Development (CCDR) of the Algarve.

António Mendonça, a former socialist minister who won the elections held in December, defeating the list supported by the previous chairman at the polls, joked with this fact, referring that, in the Algarve case, «continuity is an advantage», because «it will allow Luís Coelho and to his team to continue to do the good work they have done so far».

«The Algarve regional delegation has done a remarkable job on issues related to tourism and to solve some problems», he praised.

José Apolinário, for his part, recalled that there are 300 million euros on the way to the region, so that the Algarve can diversify and strengthen its economy, in addition to funds from the next community support framework.

«We need to support Algarve companies, which are undercapitalized», he defended.

An objective to which the regional OE delegation is willing to contribute if requested.

“We are certainly available for dialogue. There are two aspects here. One is the normal support for the development of our economy, through what are typically available funds. But we have a novelty here, which has to do with money destined to diversify the economic base».

«On the first aspect, we probably don't have much to say, as it is something that CCDR already does and does well. As for the discussion on how diversification can be carried out with good effects for the region, here we will have some contribution to make», concluded Luís Serra Coelho .
