Lagos: Reservoir to improve water supply in Barlavento completed in March

Work costs 2,6 million euros

The construction of a new water reservoir for human consumption, in Lagos, which will make it possible to fill gaps in the supply of this essential good in the Barlavento area, should be completed in March, announced Águas do Algarve, the company responsible for this intervention.

The creation of this new reserve in Barlavento by the multi-municipal water supply and sanitation company in the Algarve motivated an investment of around 2,6 million euros and aims to ensure "the necessary increase in storage capacity" associated with the Water Treatment Plant. Water (ETA) of Fontainhas.

The work includes the construction of a new reservoir «consisting of two cells, each with a volume of 5000 cubic meters (m3), representing a total reinforcement of 10.000 m3».

The new infrastructure will be built next to the existing reservoir, which has a storage capacity of 1100 m3. In the end, the two deposits will work “as a single reserve”.

«This is a deficient area in terms of water supply, namely in high season», he revealed to the Sul Informação Teresa Fernandes, spokesperson for Águas do Algarve.

In question is the area served by the ETA das Fontainhas, which only works at peak demand, namely in high tourist season.

The new reservoir aims to promote “the capacity to regulate” this treatment plant, “avoiding the interruption of supply at delivery points at peak consumption times and in periods of scheduled infrastructure maintenance”.

This large investment is justified, according to Teresa Fernandes, with the increase in the «resident and floating population».

«In this way, we are able to guarantee greater peace of mind, as well as a better response, while increasing the resilience and flexibility of the multi-municipal water supply system in the region», he summarized.

«The contract for the Nova Reserva do Barlavento is nearing completion, with the application of the interior coating of the built cells, the execution of the exterior arrangements and the connections to the Final Lagos Reservoir being in progress».

In addition to the construction of the two cells, the intervention included the installation of a maneuvering chamber, the interconnection with the existing reserve and the diversion of a conduit.
