Festival Scianema debuts at Lethes

“It has been a challenge to continue our public-facing events over the past two years, so we are very proud to be able to return to the physical world”

The 5th edition of Scianema, a film festival dedicated to the ocean and its preservation, takes place from the 3rd to the 5th of March, at Teatro Lethes, in Faro.

For the first time, the festival will take place in this cultural space, with sessions always at 21 pm.

«This event has free admission and on the big screen will be presented a variety of films and themes that will surprise, create debate and change our perception of the marine world», says the association Sciaena, organizer of the initiative. «

«Each night, in addition to the chosen films, there will also be space for a brief debate with specialists of each subject and with the filmmakers themselves, where the public can interact, question and think about the sea and our place in its protection», adds.

The first session of Scianema is at 21 pm on Thursday, the 00rd, with the screening of the film “Picture a Scientist”, by Sharon Shattuck and Ian Cheney.

This film analyzes the path of women in science over the last few decades, and the inequalities, pressures and abuses they have faced.

The matter will be discussed after the film with researcher Lisa Borges, an expert in fisheries science for over 25 years.

On the second day of the festival, Cineclube de Faro takes the helm of the programming, having chosen the film “Se o Mar Deixar”, by Luís Alves de Matos – a cross between the eyes of a man coming from the city and a man from the sea who inhabits a fishing village, in a session that will feature the director's presence.

The 5th edition of Scianema ends on Saturday, the 5th, on a night dedicated to the Ria Formosa, its people, biodiversity and respective threats, with the screening of two documentaries filmed in this incredible coastal area.

The first will be “Cavalos de Guerra” by João Rodrigues, and then there will be the premiere of the documentary “From Culatra”, by director Ana Monteiro.

To close, there will be a conversation with both directors.

«It was a challenge to continue our public-facing events over the last two years, so we are very proud to be able to return to the physical world, and above all to hold this event for the first time at the incredible Lethes Theater», says Nicolas Blanc, from Sciaena, about the event.

«It is natural that there has been a slight disconnection from the public regarding nature and the ocean, given the enormous adversities we have been going through, but it is of great importance to share these films, which show us the beauty of the ocean, but also the threats it faces, and what we can do as individuals but above all as a society to limit our impacts and restore the health of our seas”, he concluded.

In addition to the Lethes Theater and the Cineclube de Faro, this edition has a partnership with the Associação Recreativa e Cultural de Músicos, the Center for Marine Sciences, the Center for Marine and Environmental Research, the Erasmus Student Network Algarve, the Municipality of Faro, Sociedade Recreativa Artística Farense and RUA FM.
