Algarve Surf Clube stands out in the «biggest event among surf clubs to date» in the region

The competition included surfing, bodyboarding and longboarding.

The Algarve Surf Clube, with victories in the general ranking, in surfing and in longboard, but also Portimão Surf Clube, which won in the bodyboard category, were the big winners of the Algarve Surfing Cup 2022, which brought together 147 federated athletes at Praia da Rocha. of nine Algarve clubs, on Saturday and Sunday, the 30th and 31st of January.

This was «the biggest event between surf clubs held in the Algarve to date» and included the modalities of surfing, bodyboarding and longboarding.

On Saturday, at the sub-16 level, «there was a great level of surfing in the first round of 32 surfers, with emphasis on Luca Perini (Lagos Surf Club) at just 12 years old, he reached the semi-finals», according to Portimão Surf Clube, who organized the event.

In females, the one who stood out the most was Concha Balsemão, «newcomer from Australia, and very motivated to represent her 1st training club, Portimão Surf Clube, and Bianca Nicoleta, from Albufeira Surf Clube, which is in full evolution».

«In the Open category, the athletes from the Surf Club of Aljezur stood out the most, especially Halley Batista, João Serafim and João Maria Mendonça. Francisco Canelas and Baltazar Pinto, from Portimão Surf Clube, also had solid performances», say the organizers of the event.

 

 

On Sunday, in the sub-12 surf competition, the morning was «of great emotion», with Kai Lenderink (Algarve Surf Clube) securing the victory. «The remaining 5 finalists fought, stick by stick, for the second place, which belonged to Jack Smith, also from the Algarve Surf Clube».

In the under 16 category, the final had representatives from four different clubs, with Salvador Catarino (Algarve Surf Clube) winning. The runner-up was André Duarte, who was the best classified in the Iate Clube Marina de Portimão.

In women's surfing, Concha (Portimão Surf Clube) and Bianca (Albufeira Surf Clube) reached the 1st and 2nd places, respectively. «It is also worth mentioning Inês Filipe, from Clube Naval de Portimão, who, at just 15 years old, reached a brilliant 3rd place».

In the Open category, Clube de Surf Aljezur stood out, «with a landslide victory for Halley Batista». The runner-up was João Serafim.

In the Masters (+40), the winner was former professional surfer Jason Xavier (Algarve Surf Clube) and the 2nd place was Rodrigo Lacerda (Aljezur Surf Club).

In the men's longboard, Halley Batista (Aljezur Surf Clube) won 1st place and Diogo Barbosa from Clube de Surf de Faro, made an honorable 2nd place, taking to Faro, Algarve Longboard Mecca, a silver medal.

In the women's longboard, the winner was Sofia Strevens, only 14 years old (Algarve Surf Clube). In second place was a newcomer to the competition, Raquel Encarnação (Portimão Surf Clube).

 

 

In the bodyboard competition, the modality with the fewest entries, «the highlight goes entirely to the Bodyboard Nucleus of Portimão Surf Clube, which had an overwhelming dominance, with great performances from Maria P. Balsemão (female), Duarte Firmino (open), Rafael (under 16) and Sandro Nóbrega (Masters (+40), all champions of their respective categories. Kai Lenderink (Algarve Surf Club) was a double winner, as he won the same category [under-12] in surfing and bodyboarding».

There was also time for a special meeting “Deeply Groms Meeting”, which consisted of a half-hour demonstration with about 30 athletes under 12 years old, with Violeta Coucelo (Best female), Kai Lenderink (Best male) and Bento Palma (Best move) to stand out.

Participants also joined in a celebration in honor of Olly Heukels, Portimão Surf Club athlete who passed away last Thursday, January 28th, at just 15 years old.

The Algarve Surfing Cup 2022 was organized by Portimão Surf Clube, with institutional support from the Portimão City Council and Parish Council, the Portuguese Surfing Federation and the IPDJ – Portuguese Institute for Sports and Youth. The event also had the support of PQ Design?, Mirachoro Hotel, InoFix tapes and 100% ecological idden wax.
