Algarve Cup: Denmark withdraws due to covid-19 outbreak

Danes have already missed a game that should have taken place at Estádio Algarve

The Danish women's football team announced today the premature withdrawal of the 28th edition of the Algarve Cup, after an outbreak was detected with four cases of Covid-19 in the team.

The Football Federation of Denmark invoked, in a statement, “reasons for the health and safety of players and 'staff'”, after the appearance, this Thursday, of an outbreak of covid-19 in the group that had debuted in the Algarve Cup. with a defeat (0-1) on Wednesday against Italy.

Coach Lars Sondergaard is one of four infected people, all in isolation, while the rest of the entourage will travel home on Friday, on a charter flight.

The game between Sweden and Denmark, which was scheduled for Friday, at Estádio Algarve, was canceled and the three points and a 3-0 victory awarded to the Swedes, according to the tournament regulations.

The Sweden team takes the lead in the Algarve Cup, with the same points as Portugal and Italy, before facing the Portuguese team on Sunday, at Estádio Algarve, at 17:05.

In view of this change, the organization of the Algarve Cup informed that, on the 23rd of February, there will be two games, both with a duration of 90 minutes and scheduled to start at 11:00 am.

The two teams with the best scores at the end of the second round will play the final, at Estádio Municipal de Lagos, and the other two will play the third and fourth place attribution game, at Estádio Algarve.
