Legislative 2022: Find out how the parties behaved in each municipality in the Algarve

Analysis of the results party by party, county by county

The Socialist Party, which won the Legislative Elections this Sunday, January 30, at national level, was also the winner in the Algarve, where it obtained 39,87% of the votes. Even so, it was a result below the national percentage, of 41,68% for the PS (still not counting the data from emigration circles).

The PS elected five deputies in the Algarve and 117 across the country, obtaining an absolute majority.

Analyzing the final results in the constituency of the district of Faro, it can be seen that the municipality where the socialists obtained the largest share in percentage terms was Monchique (48,85%), followed by Alcoutim (46,92%) and Vila Real de Santo António (46,76%), the short distance from each other.

Although, as will be seen in relation to other political forces, it cannot be said that there is a direct relationship between both elections, these are three municipalities where, in the Municipalities of last September, the PS won, in two of them. stealing the Chambers to the PSD (Monchique and VRSA).

The Socialist Party's worst performance took place in Albufeira, where it obtained 35,10% of the votes, followed by Portimão (37,27%) and Loulé (38,19%). These last two municipalities are usually socialist strongholds in the Algarve, and Loulé is the birthplace of Jamila Madeira, head of the PS list.

Rui Rio's PSD, as it happened at the national level, was the second most voted party by the Algarve, having obtained 24% of the votes. It elected 35 deputies in the Algarve and 3 at national level.

Alcoutim was the municipality where the social democrats achieved their highest percentage in our region: 32,09%. São Brás de Alportel (27,73%) and Loulé (27,71%) followed.

Conversely, the PSD achieved its lowest vote in Vila Real de Santo António (interestingly, the home of Luís Gomes, the head of the orange list), with less than 20% of the votes (18,61%). Olhão (20,64%) and Silves (21,15%) follow.

And the second big winner of the election night, CHEGA, managed not only to be the third most voted party in the entire Algarve (12,30%), but also to obtain the same position in all the Algarve municipalities. It elected one deputy in the Algarve and 12 nationally.

Voting for the far-right party was more expressive in Albufeira (15,21%), closely followed by Lagoa (15,12%) and Portimão (14,20%).

Seeming to show that, contrary to what some commentators initially intended, CH is not a phenomenon of the most rural areas, the Algarve municipalities where its vote was lowest were Monchique (5,85%), Alcoutim (6,95% ) and Vila do Bispo (8,26%).

At regional level, the fourth most voted political force was the Bloco de Esquerda, which won 5,76% of the votes, but lost the deputy it had for the Algarve. At national level, it dropped to 5 deputies. The most expressive vote for BE took place in Vila do Bispo (7,12%) and the lowest in Alcoutim (2,15%).

The Bloco was the 4th most voted party in the municipalities of Aljezur, Castro Marim, Faro, Lagoa, Lagos, São Brás de Alportel, Olhão, Portimão, Tavira and Vila do Bispo. It was 5th, after the CDU, in Alcoutim, Monchique, Silves and VRSA, and obtained the same position, but after the Liberal Initiative, in Albufeira and Loulé.

The CDU (PCP+PEV) was, in regional terms, the 5th most voted force. Once again, it did not elect any deputy for the Algarve and, nationally, it dropped to 6. There were municipalities where it was the 4th most voted: Alcoutim, Monchique, Silves and VRSA. But even in Silves, where the City Council is chaired by communist Rosa Palma, the Coalition was unable to supplant the CH.

In other counties – Faro, Lagoa, Loulé, Portimão and São Brás de Alportel – CDU was 6th, behind CHE, BE and Iniciativa Liberal. In the others – Aljezur, Castro Marim, Lagos, Olhão and Tavira – it was the 5th.

The sixth party in the preferences of the Algarve was the Liberal Initiative, which obtained 4,64% of the votes. The highest percentage was achieved in Albufeira (5,37%), where it was even the 4th most voted. On the other hand, those who least liked the IL were the alcoutenejos, who gave it only 1,36% of the votes. IL elected 8 deputies at the national level, making it the 4th political force in the country.

The People Animals Nature PAN reached 2,16% of the votes in the Algarve, with the highest percentage of votes in Lagos (2,73%) and the lowest in Alcoutim (0,36%). It elected only 1 deputy across the country.

LIVRE secured 1.08% of the votes of voters in the Algarve, and, like PAN, it was in Lagos that it had the most votes (1,37%) and in Alcoutim it had the least (0,43%). Elected 1 deputy.

Finally, CDS/PP was the 9th most voted force among voters in the Algarve region, with the same percentage as Livre, but fewer votes. Monchique was the municipality where centrists obtained their highest vote (1,43%), while the lowest was in Vila do Bispo (0,55%). Not even in Portimão, home of José Pedro Caçorino, leader of the centrists' list, did the party achieve a significant result ((1,37%).

At the national level, and since the foundation of the party and the current democratic regime, these were the first elections in which the CDS failed to elect any deputy, disappearing from the parliamentary map.
