Legislative: 13 thousand people in confinement and in homes vote between today and tomorrow

In total, there are 13.118 voters, including elderly people in homes and people in mandatory confinement because they are infected with SARS-CoV-2, who will be able to vote without going out between today and Wednesday.

The votes of the more than 13 elderly people in homes and people in confinement due to Covid-19 who asked to vote in advance in the legislative elections start to be collected today, in a two-day process across the country.

In total, there are 13.118 voters, including elderly people in homes and people in mandatory confinement because they are infected with SARS-CoV-2, who will be able to vote without going out between today and Wednesday.

According to the final data from the electoral administration of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration, 397 citizens signed up for early vote in confinement and 12.721 citizens interned in residential structures for the elderly.

The process is nothing new and it was a year ago that the municipalities organized for the first time to collect from the homes and homes of voters in confinement the bulletins with the choice for President of the Republic.

As has happened in previous presidential and municipal elections, during the two days reserved for the process, teams from the Municipal Councils, accompanied by representatives of the parties, go door to door to collect votes.

Once completed, the bulletins will be kept in two envelopes – first in a white envelope which is then placed in another blue envelope – and returned to the mayor or whoever replaces him.

In a note sent this Monday, 24 January, the Ministry of Internal Administration appeals to all voters to “strict compliance with health safety standards during the voting exercise, guaranteeing the safety of the process”, namely the use of their own pen. , mask, social distancing and hand hygiene.

Registration for early voting in confinement or in homes was only possible between the 20th and 23rd, but voters who did not do so and are in isolation on election day, on January 30th, can exceptionally vote in person on that day, after the Government requested an opinion from the advisory council of the Attorney General's Office.

The Government recommended to voters in this situation that will vote at a specific time, between 18:00 and 19:00, advising other citizens to do so between 8 am and 00 pm.

Last week, at a press conference, the Assistant Secretary of State and Home Affairs pointed out, on the other hand, that this early voting model “will practically cease to apply” after the Directorate-General for Health has reduced the period of validity. confinement for seven days.

According to Antero Luís, this law is practically reduced to users of nursing homes, who actually represent the majority of the 13.118 requests.

In the two other elections held during the pandemic, this possibility was not given, but early voting in confinement had already been possible.

In the Presidential elections, 12.906 citizens registered, 4.952 of whom were admitted to nursing homes, and in the Municipalities, 7.507 voters registered, 437 in confinement due to Covid-19 and 7.070 in nursing homes.
