The Aliens and Borders Service (SEF), within the scope of the simplification of procedures, provides, as of today, the Automatic Renewal functionality for the approximately 29.000 residence permits that expire between January 1st and March 31st, with guarantee compliance with safety rules and mitigation of the consequences that resulted from the sanitary emergency situation.
In July 2020, SEF launched a new feature in the “Personal Area” of the SEF Portal, where citizens can access the “Automatic Renewal” of their residence permit, without the need to travel in person to a service desk.
To date, more than 161.000 automatic renewals have been carried out.
The Service has been adopting exceptional measures, with a view to recovering pending issues and efficiency in document management for foreign citizens, following the order no. 5793-A/2020 of 22 May 2020, which determined the implementation of a simplified procedure processing applications for the granting of residence permits.
Among SEF's initiatives with the purpose of mitigating the consequences that resulted from the health emergency situation, the adoption of exceptional and temporary measures, has the initiative of automatic renewals of residence permits as one of the most impactful, which allows for the recovery of pending issues and a gain in efficiency in document management for foreign citizens.
